About me - Vicky Lawrence

I have been practicing yoga since I was in my twenties and it has been my constant companion throughout working as a nurse when I was younger, becoming a mum and working with people with special needs.  I am passionate about bringing yoga to people who may feel that it currently isn't accessible to them.

Yoga

There are many definitions of yoga, some of which we will explore in class. Yoga is a state of being, a state of stillness, a union of our mind and our heart.  The practice of yoga gives us many practices we can do to reach this "state", postures (asanas) breathwork (pranayama) and meditation to name just three.  The practice of yoga has many health benefits and can be life changing in how we navigate the times we find ourselves in.

The 4 is a reference to the beautiful 4 attitudes described within the ancient yoga texts of Patanjali; friendliness, compassion, joy and impartiality.  My style of teaching is for anyone of any age who cannot at the present time, for whatever reason, get down on a mat to do yoga. Classes will use a chair for support and standing with a wall for support and be adapted to work around physical conditions or injuries. This is not just an exercise class though! It is a class where the postures are adapted but you will experience a full yoga class of breathwork, meditation and some yoga philosophy to think on.  Please feel free to email me if you would like to discuss what form of class would best suit your needs. 

Now

Yoga is all about the here and now.  We can practice yoga right now, with how our body is, right now.  Would you like to experience yoga but haven't because of age, medical conditions, energy levels, pain, mobility, stress levels?  Yoga is within us all, at all times, we may just need guidance to find it. A group class will "meet" all of us as we are each week.  Supporting each other in the present moment to access yoga is all part of our individual journey. The "now" also relates to the times we find ourselves in too. Never has yoga been more important and needed than now.  Our lives are a constant demand on the senses and heart and yoga can help us find peace in the chaos. 

My qualifications

British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) level 1 Foundation course

In 2020 I began to want to study yoga and work towards becoming a teacher.

BWY Certificate in Yoga teaching

I am due to complete my yoga teacher training in December after 18 months of study.  BWY provide the highest level of yoga teacher training  currently available in the UK. 

Yoga for Adults with special needs certificate

 I have studied with the wonderful people at Special Yoga ( "Special Yoga: Supporting Children with Special and Additional Needs to Achieve their True Potential and Purpose"). My studies with them are continuing www.specialyoga.co.uk

BSc (Hons) Clinical Nursing

Until 2012 I was a registered general nurse working in palliative care.  Although no longer registered to practice I maintain a 3 day first aid certificate and the medical and therapeutic knowledge I gained as a nurse is invaluable as a yoga teacher.

Chair based yoga classes on Tuesday mornings at 09:30am or 11.15am at Allendale House, Wimborne.

Please email me if you would like to join the class or call me on the number above.  I will then email you a health questionnaire which must be completed and returned before your first class so that I can make sure you are safe in the practice.  Please see section below about your data safety. 


 

First weeks class is £8 payable in cash or by card on the day, this means you can see if the class is for you, then  classes are charged per half term or termly  as a single payment but this works out at £8 per class.  Payment can be paid by bank transfer or card payment/cash at  class.

Classes are held in the Bankes room which is accessed through the front door of Allendale House.  I will have a board at the door to show the way! No need to sign in.

Disabled toilets are available and all staff including myself are first aid trained. We are unable to assist with any personal care please contact me to discuss if you have any questions. 


Class will run from 9:30am for 60 -75 minutes.  Please arrive no earlier than 9:15am.  Later class is at 11:15am for 60-75 minutes. Please arrive no earlier than 11am. Thank you. 


  1. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in.
  2. It is encouraged to remove socks and shoes but please do whatever feels comfortable for you.
  3. Bring a small cushion and a warm layer or small blanket for relaxation. 
  4. It is advised that you leave one hour or 90 minutes after eating before starting class unless medical conditions require you not to. 
  5. Do bring a yoga mat for relaxation if you have practiced relaxation before and you know you can get back up again. 



This is a commonly asked question and fear for people new to yoga.  Yoga is for all faiths and none.  The ancient wisdom of yoga is not attached to any particular religion although is practiced within some religions like Hinduism.  Some of the philosophy does relate to the spiritual side of being human but this spirituality could relate to our belief in a God, in universal energy, in nature or whatever we choose.  Please chat to me if any of this is of concern for you personally.
